Shane van Gisbergen is making his Le Mans 24 Hour debut this year, racing a Ferrari 488 GTE Evo.
The Kiwi’s name has been pencilled in on the first provisional 2022 Le Mans entry sheet, published overnight.
He will join the American race team Riley Motorsport in the GTE-Pro class.
There, he will partner Felipe Fraga and Sam Bird for the twice-around-the-clock enduro.
It’s not the first time van Gisbergen was ‘set’ to race in the famous race before.
He was scheduled to drive an LMP2 car in the 2020 rendition of the race. But Covid had the last laugh.
His entry bumps the number of ‘confirmed’ Kiwis racing up to three.
Brendon Hartley is racing with Toyota in the Le Mans Hyperclass.
Nick Cassidy is making his Le Mans debut this year, racing a Ferrari 488 in the GTE-Am class.
Jaxon Evans has said he is returning to do a full World Endurance Championship season this year, meaning he will be doing Le Mans.
However, he is yet to announce what team he is racing for. All we know is Evans will race a Porsche.
There are quite a few TBC slots on the list, including at teams that look likely to field Evans.
Overall, there are 62 cars confirmed for the 90th running of Le Mans.
Unfortunately, the much-anticipated return of Peugeot to top-tier sports car racing has been delayed, and they are not doing Le Mans this year.
The race takes place on June 10-11.
