Many people likely scoffed and stared rather pointedly at Ford for giving their famous Mustang line-up the electric treatment.
To be fair, people still are.
But Ford won’t care. In fact, the Mustang Mach-E is so damn popular Ford has said ‘no more orders…for now, at least.’
Ford’s Mustang Mach-E is in such high demand that Ford can’t actually keep up with orders. So, to not fall too far behind, they have simply stopped taking them.
It appears to merely be a temporary pause. A note to investors in Ford’s EV projects suggests the company is undergoing big changes to its operations to meet the high volume of demand.
“Longer term, the automaker will be looking to triple its installed capacity for the EV by 2023 to ensure it can meet demand on a go-forward basis,” the note read.
By 2023, Ford expects to produce 200,000 Mach-Es annually.
Ford only put the Mach-E on the market in December 2020. Since then, the car has been the second most sold EV in the United States. Only Tesla’s Model Y sells more units each year.
Even before the Mach-E hit dealerships, Ford had 30,000 reservations to fulfil.
In December 2021, Ford said demand for the Mach-E was twice that of the production rate.
Demand has only gone and increased some more.
To get on top of demand, Ford plans to use a plant in Mexico to make even more Mach-Es.
On top of the unprecedented demand, the automotive industry has battled a shortage of parts. EVs are, in fact, worse affected as the price of nickel, which is needed for batteries, soars out of control.
