Unless you live under a rock, you’ll know American retail giant Costco is coming to New Zealand.
A megastore you have to pay to even buy things, Costco will also look to shake up the fuel market by offering unleaded 91, 95 and diesel.
Its station, which is opposite the Westgate megastore in Auckland, opened Wednesday morning.
One litre of 91 at Costco will cost you $2.50.
A litre of the premium 95 costs $2.60 per litre.
Finally, diesel will cost $2.10 before road user charges.
The prices are significantly lower than most established fuel retailers, especially in the Auckland region, where there is an additional tax.
Importantly, Costco fuel can only be purchased by Costco members. Memberships can be purchased for a $60 annual fee.
Even so, the fuel price per litre was cheaper than a nearby Gull and Pak’nSave, both retailers you would consider being on the more affordable scale.
You can be cheeky and purchase a membership card now. The 12-month ticker won’t start until the megastore officially opens in August, so you can snag four extra months by buying early.
About 700 people have already bought memberships. Costco forecasts a million memberships being sold once the store establishes itself on the Kiwi market.
Costco plans on opening stores in Wellington and Christchurch.
