Mercedes has pulled the covers off its look into the brand’s high-performance future, revealing the concept EV AMG Vision.
Love it or hate it, the EV AMG Vision is, importantly, a concept car. So, what you see is not overly likely to make it to production.
In saying that, there’s a lot to digest.
The elongated tail makes the Vision appear much longer than it actually is. It also sits exceptionally low.
The short overhangs don’t exactly make for the sexiest front end we’ve ever seen, but it’s all in the name of aerodynamics.
Mercedes has also incorporated its Formula 1 team into the design, with the splashes of Petronas green along the floor, F1-inspired wheel covers and the star pattern at the rear.
The star-shaped headlights are a neat touch. How practical they are, though, remains to be seen.
“The Vision AMG shows in spectacular style what electrification could look like at Mercedes-AMG while staying true to the brand aesthetic,” the company says.
Wing mirrors will always look more aesthetically pleasing than cameras. But Mercedes and a host of other carmakers continue to think otherwise. Ergo, the concept comes with cameras.
Likewise, brake lights are placed where you expect an exhaust system to be.
Obviously, an EV doesn’t need an exhaust exit setup, but Mercedes has come up with a design to feign its appearance while still being practical.
Thankfully, a rear light bar sits at the top of the spoiler, saving the need for the trailing car to be staring at the ground so they can see the brake lights.
Powering the Vision is a brand-new EV platform dubbed AMG.EA. The platform uses an axial flux motor, which is believed to be lighter and more powerful than the standard EV setup.
Possible production of the Vision will start no earlier than at least 2025, and we expect several changes to the shape and look as we inch nearer that date.
