Toyota NZ has announced that by the end of the year all Toyota Corollas sold here will be electrified.
First appearing in 1966, the Corolla has gone on to sell over 50 million cars worldwide, making it one of the most well known vehicle nameplates ever.
Toyota New Zealand General Manager of Sales, Steve Prangnell says the decision to no longer offer a petrol-only engine in the Corolla is driven by strong consumer preference for hybrid-electric powertrains and Toyota’s objective to reduce the carbon footprint of their new vehicle sales in New Zealand.
“For some time now, Toyota’s hybrid-electric powertrain has been the most popular choice across not just the Corolla range, but passenger cars generally” says Prangnell.
Later on in 2022, Toyota will introduce the Corolla Cross to its vehicle lineup. The crossover will be Toyota’s newest entrant into the increasingly popular SUV segment.
Available in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive, the Cross makes use of Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA-C) and a 2.0-litre four-cylinder mated to a hybrid electric system.
Similar to the larger RAV4 hybrid, the front-wheel-drive Corolla Cross features a petrol engine assisted by an electric motor whereas the all-wheel-drive model is assisted by two electric motors, with one powering the rear axle.
“The all-new Corolla Cross builds on that foundation and offers even more versatility and creature comforts to make everything, from a daily commute to a weekend escape, more memorable.” commented Prangnell.
Further details on powertrain specifications and features will be provided close to the launch of the new compact SUV later on in 2022.
