Hyundai’s eagerly awaited Ioniq 6 Electrified Streamliner has been revealed making it the second model in the brand’s all-electric lineup.
The new EV is Hyundai’s most aerodynamically styled vehicle to date, helping the car slip through the air as efficiently as possible without compromising on personal space inside the cabin.
It makes use of Hyundai’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) to give the car a long wheelbase of 2950mm, and a total length of 4855mm which is just short of a Tesla Model S.
A 77.4kWh battery can be mated with two layouts including a single motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) or dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD). The top of the line AWD model produces 239kW and 605Nm, good enough for a claimed 0 to 100km/h time of 5.1 seconds.
Combined with the Ioniq 6’s sleek design, Hyundai says the EV can achieve an estimated range of over 610kms on one charge. Thanks to its 800v architecture, a 350kW outlet can charge the Ioniq 6 from 10 to 80 per cent in 18 minutes.
Hyundai says the Ioniq 6 features “innovative personal space” with technology like Dual Colour Ambient Lighting which allows the driver to customise the look and feel of the vehicle’s cabin.
Other interior features include Speed Sync Lighting by changing the cabin lighting brightness based on the Ioniq 6’s speed as well as Hyundai’s EV Performance Tune-up system, allowing the driver to adjust steering feel, motor power, accelerator pedal sensitivity, and driveline mode.
The Ioniq 6 features a modular touchscreen dashboard which integrates a 12-inch infotainment display with a 12-inch digital cluster.
In the event of a low-battery, the infotainment system uses its real-time mapping feature to find the nearest charging station and plan the best route there.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard while two Bluetooth devices can be connected to the car at once. Sound is pumped into the cabin through eight Bose speakers while navigation is handled by Bluelink Infotainment. Four type-C and one type-A USB ports are available to charge occupant devices.
Driving assistance systems like Hyundai SmartSense ensure high levels of safety on the road. These include a highway driving assistant which helps maintain a set distance and speed from the vehicle ahead along with ensuring the vehicle is centered within the lane.
The Ioniq 6 can also change lanes by itself when above a certain speed, but only while the driver is holding the steering wheel and operating the indicator stalk in the intended direction (on a motorway). Cruise control, speed limit assist, driver attention warning and a collision avoidance assistant also help maintain driving safety.
Backseat passenger safety is also assured with a safe exit warning in the event of an approaching vehicle from either side.
The Ioniq 6 has over-the-air (OTA) software updates for the vehicle’s various systems.
Twelve exterior colours are available from launch along with four interior colour options.
Production of the Ioniq 6 will start in the third quarter of 2022 with market launch to be announced later.
Following the debut of the Ioniq 6, it’s likely we will see a performance-oriented N model be revealed tomorrow as Hyundai’s “N day” gets underway.
