A 1985 Ford Escort RS Turbo Series 1 that was first owned by the late Diana, Princess of Wales, has fetched a model-specific record amount at auction.
At the start of August, Diana’s unique RS Turbo popped up for sale courtesy of Silverstone Auctions and considering its royal connection, it was likely to fetch a pretty penny when it went under the hammer.
The car ended up selling for £722,500 ($NZ1,383,576), blowing the previous £63,000 ($NZ120,557) sale price for a similar car out of the water.
Contributing to its record sale is the one of a kind black paint job compared to the run of white-only RS Turbos. Aside from its inconspicuous colour, the Escort also features a secondary rear view mirror for Diana’s protection officer.
Over the years, the car has amassed 40,170kms and is in exceptional condition for its age.
