KTM resurrects 790 Adventure

In a classic case of back to the future, KTM is reintroducing a ‘throwback’ model, with the return of the KTM 790 Adventure, updated and reinvigorated for 2023.

A former NZ Autocar Bike of the Year winner, it makes a surprise return perhaps because KTM sees a tougher economic future ahead. The bike will be produced for KTM by its Chinese partner, CF Moto. This announcement follows the reintroduction of the KTM Duke 790 recently.

The 2023 KTM 790 Adventure was redesigned at KTM HQ in Austria. The parallel twin LC8c motor is still good for 71kW (95hp) at 8000rpm and churns out 88Nm of torque at 6500rpm but tweaks have helped it meet Euro 5 emissions regulations. A lightweight aluminum engine protector is fitted as standard.

The bike is said to be more stable at constant speed, with more cornering poise thanks to a 20 per cent increase of rotating mass. A reconfigured optional Quickshifter+ enables faster shifting and the exhaust system is all new. Its 15,000km service intervals remain.

The Power Assist Slipper Clutch gets new friction plates and there’s also a new airbox. The bike benefits from the latest Inertia Management Unit overseeing Cornering Motorcycle Traction Control and ABS, Motor Slip Regulation and the administration of Ride Modes. ABS programmes now automatically switch between the Ride Modes.

Underpinning the bike are 43mm WP Apex forks with 200mm of travel, which is an identical range of movement for the shock, featuring preload adjustability. A low seat height of 840mm remains a feature of the 790 Adventure.

So does a decent touring range of 450km thanks to a 20L fuel tank. Tyres are Pirelli Scorpions, optimised for a mix of road and trail duties.

A new front mask heads an integrated fairing while a larger, higher screen provides better wind protection. Lights are full LEDs and a brighter five-inch TFT screen better reacts to ambient lighting. Syncing the KTMConnect App facilitates nav and phone calls on the go.

Two colours will be available, one dark, one traditional. 

Expect the bike here in Q2 of next year.
