The CEO of Nissan’s performance brand Nismo has confirmed that an all-new hybrid sports car is currently in the works, serving as a possible replacement for the GT-R.
Speaking to Autocar in the UK, Nismo CEO Takao Katagiri said the model will arrive within this decade and will be sold in markets across the globe including Japan, Europe, and the US.
It’ll be an important car for not only Nismo but Nissan too considering its recently launched Z is unable to be sold in Europe due to strict emissions regulations.
“There is a very important vision in Europe for Nissan. It’s around the heart of this new model,” Katagiri said.
While a name for the car is yet to be revealed, there is speculation that the model will serve as an indirect replacement for the GT-R after it wrapped up production earlier this year.
In terms of its powertrain, Katagiri confirmed the new model will feature something along the lines of a hybrid system. He also said there will be a roll-out of other hybrid and EV models in the future too.
For now, we can expect to see more “mainstream” electric models before any sort of EV sports car. However, the news of a high performance hybrid Nismo sports car does garner our excitement.
