A newly laid section of road on State Highway 1 in Dome Valley has failed over the weekend, causing damage to vehicles.
Police reportedly received over 40 complaints from motorists after the chip seal beneath them seemingly peeled off and stuck to their vehicles’ tyres.
According to Waka Kotahi, heavy rain caused the material to strip from the crucial piece of road which was then exacerbated by warm weather on Saturday.
Traffic management is now being prioritised at the site between Wellsford and Warkworth near Frogpool Farm with a spokesperson for the transport agency saying permanent repairs will be carried out today.
“Severe thunderstorms in the area have meant that the remedial works to replace the chip seal site with asphalt will now take place on Monday,” Jacqui Hori-Hoult, Waka Kotahi Regional Manager Maintenance & Operations for Auckland said.
“We will be doing what we can to minimise frustration and help people prepare by sharing information about what they can expect in advance of any works.”
Fulton Hogan was responsible for resealing the road and has since apologised for the damage and inconvenience caused to motorists.
“We are working to ensure that we can get in and complete permanent repairs as soon as we are able and will be taking all compensation claims seriously,” said Simon Dyne, Chief Operating Officer Infrastructure at Fulton Hogan.
Remaining road maintenance and repairs on the road will resume as scheduled.
