An all-new fully electric Ford pickup is on the way with the carmaker announcing that the new model will be produced at a new factory in the United States.
The new EV will be Ford’s second-generation electric truck which is said to “grow and reinvent” the company’s truck franchise.
With regard to its codename, Project T3 as its referred to is short for “Trust The Truck” since the development team made it their goal to create a pickup people can trust going into the digital age.
They stated that the truck should be fully updatable, constantly improving, supports towing, hauling, exportable power and features new innovations owners will want.
“Project T3 is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to revolutionize America’s truck. We are melding 100 years of Ford truck know-how with world-class electric vehicle, software and aerodynamics talent. It will be a platform for endless innovation and capability,” said Jim Farley, Ford CEO.
At this point, there’s no way in knowing if the new pickup will make it outside of North America and be introduced into markets such as our own. Some publications suggest it will join Ford’s F-series lineup which isn’t currently on offer in New Zealand.
As for where the new electric pickup will be built, Ford states that it will take place at its currently under-construction its ‘BlueOval City’ campus in Tennessee which is said to be capable of manufacturing 500,000 EV trucks per year when it’s up and running at full production.
Big investment is going into the project too with the American carmaker and partner SK On pledging $US5.6 billion ($NZ9 billion) in the campus.
The news comes just days after Ford announced it will incur a $US3 billion ($NZ4.8 billion) loss with regard to the fully electric side of its business in 2023.
