Nissan just released a teaser showing the rear end of a Skyline GT-R (R32) which it is supposedly turning into an electric vehicle (EV).
That news may sound like sacrilege to some of you considering the model is famous for its twin-turbocharged 2.6-litre straight six-cylinder (RB26DETT) but the prospect of an electrified ‘Godzilla’ is an interesting one to say the least.
In the short video released by the Japanese carmaker, we see the rear end of the R32-generation GT-R with its quad circle tail lights illuminated to which we then hear the sound of the aforementioned petrol engine start. This had us questioning whether the car would be some sort of hybrid instead.
Nevertheless, the name “R32 EV” appears on screen and that’s all we’re getting for now apart from a link to a new website for the project.
According to the video description, the idea was spawned by a Nissan engineer who joined the company because of the iconic model.
“I want to build a more exciting car by adding the latest electrification technology that I am involved with to my favorite car,” they said.
The conversion could also be hinting at the brand’s upcoming next-generation GT-R, presumably titled R36, which will reportedly be electrified in some way.
Recently, Toyota conducted a similar project with a Corolla Levin (AE86) where it had an electric motor transplanted in place of its original inline four-cylinder 4AGE petrol engine. It also converted a Trueno to run purely on hydrogen.
We await to hear and see more about the Nissan GT-R R32 EV.
