Porsche has long partaken in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with many of its sports cars competing and even winning. To celebrate its achievements and the race’s 100th anniversary, the German carmaker has released the 911 GTS Le Mans Centenaire Edition.
Before we get started, it’s worth noting that Porsche will only be making 72 examples of the special edition sports car and they will only be sold in France at a price tag of €237,819 ($NZ425,694).
The unique model is based on a 911 GTS and features a turbocharged flat six-cylinder engine making 353kW, mated to the choice of a 7-speed manual transmission or an 8-speed automatic.
It’s purpose is to pay tribute to what is arguably the world’s most prestigious endurance race with unique touches such as a “24h Le Mans” logo on the rear grille, a race track outline in the colours of the French flag, and anniversary lettering on the B-pillar.
However, much of the car’s exclusive appointments have been inspired by two Le Mans-winning Porsches of old, the 1951 356 SL and 1998 911 GT1.
Its Le Mans Silver Metallic paintwork is a direct nod to the 356 SL which won in 1951 along with the number “46” found on the doors. Inside, the 911’s seats have been clad in blue leather and blue corduroy upholstery which can also be found in the 50s race car.
The gold-coloured wheels with a silver stripe pay homage to those found on the 911 GT1 racer, as well as its red seat belts inside. Both the driver and passenger rear windows have also been replaced with a black vent.
