The New Zealand National Party has today announced its plan to build 13 new roads under the ‘Roads of National Significance’ programme if it gets elected later this year.
Leader Christopher Luxon says it’s all part of better connecting key locations across the country, which will reduce congestion, unlock housing growth, boost productivity, and increase incomes.
“National’s vision is for New Zealand to become one of the world’s leading small, advanced economies and our transport plan will help drive prosperity and lift the standard of living for all New Zealanders,” he says.
The $24 billion project will be funded by the National Land Transport Fund and other government investments, with further funding coming from developers who benefit from the new infrastructure, such as businesses that border it.
The project will be coordinated through a new National Infrastructure Agency that will look after funding and connect domestic and offshore investors with local infrastructure projects.
“National understands the importance of maintaining fiscal discipline and delivering value for every taxpayer dollar we invest. That’s why we are proposing a long-term programme of investments to deliver the infrastructure New Zealand needs within the fiscal constraints that the country finds itself,” Luxon added.
