After months of teasers and leaks, the first people mover from Volvo has officially been revealed. Say hello to the fully electric EM90.
The Swedish carmaker wants to make it clear that this isn’t just a “living room on wheels”, but a way for passengers to live better, and there’s plenty of space to do so.
The downside is that this model will only be sold in China initially as it’s based on Geely’s Zeekr 009. It’ll likely be made in the same factory too.
However, there are some key differences between the two, one of those being hat the EM90 doesn’t inherit its sibling’s over-the-top power figure. It instead gets a single 200kW electric motor that can propel the van from 0 to 100km/h in more modest 8.3 seconds, rather than 4.5.
The Volvo inherits the smaller of two batteries from the Zeekr, a 116kW unit capable of recharging from 10 to 80 per cent in under half an hour. From full, it’ll do 738km according to the China light-duty vehicle test cycle (CLTC).
It’s also capable of bi-directional charging which allows users to use the battery as a power source for other appliances or electric cars.
Although it’s based on a different vehicle, the EM90 is distinctly a Volvo thanks to its ‘Thor’s Hammer’ headlights and ‘Iron Mask’ front badge. It also comes with a choice of 19- or 20-inch wheels that help set it apart.
The EM90 can seat up to six passengers inside, with the two middle-row seats being packed with features like heating, ventilation, and massaging, as well as tables and cupholders.
Entertainment is via a 15.4-inch infotainment screen for those in the front two seats, while another screen of the same size mounted to the roof can be used for both business or pleasure as it features a camera for video calls.
It wouldn’t be a Volvo without a heavy focus on safety and driver assistance, which is why it has been equipped with sensors and surround view cameras, as well as millimetre wave radars and an ultrasonic radar.
“It’s an age-old cliché, but there really is no place like home,” said Jim Rowan, chief executive of Volvo Cars.
“A place to connect with your loved ones, to truly be yourself. It’s this feeling of home that inspired our new EM90, a car with room for life.”
Volvo says the EM90 will be offered in China first, with pre-orders being accepted now. However, it has yet to indicate where else the people mover will be sold.
