Well isn’t this a surprise! Dodge has officially teased its first-ever electric muscle car, the Charger, in a series of images posted to social media.
That’s right, the Charger is going electric whether you V8 die-hards like it or not and it’s safe to say our first look has our full undivided attention thanks to the model’s classic-inspired styling. It’s worth mentioning that this is the real deal, with the up-and-coming model shown here being a pre-production version – pretty close to how you’d find it on the showroom floor.
Much of its design cues are lent from the Charger Daytona SRT Concept that was revealed in 2022, which was of course inspired by the original 1969 Charger Daytona. The same can be said for the model shown in the teaser images which boasts a Coke bottle-like side profile, ‘R-wing’ air pass-through front grille, and squared-off rear end.
As for what’s under the bonnet, customers will be able to select from a range of different power levels on both the 400 and 800-volt variants, with the highest of those being the Banshee. Exact figures for the top-of-the-range model have yet to be released.
Also included is Dodge’s quirky Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust that uses air to emulate the sound of the brand’s V8 engines. The feature promises to sing at a volume of 126 decibels, matching the sound of a combustion-powered Hellcat.
Several reports have suggested that the new Charger may be offered with a petrol engine, but it won’t be any supercharged V8. Instead, it’ll likely be Stellantis’ twin-turbocharged ‘Hurricane’ six-cylinder if the rumour comes to light.
Dodge will fully reveal the new electric Charger sometime later in 2024 before it takes the Challenger’s place in the brand’s line-up.
