Jaecoo has announced it is releasing the J7 with a PHEV powertrain in Australia first thing in 2025. And Jaecoo NZ says it ‘aims to have it in market by the end of April 2025’. We already take the J7 here with a turbopetrol powertrain, available in FWD and AWD.
On its arrival Lewis Lu, CEO, Jaecoo Australia, commented that “The J7 PHEV is more than just an SUV —it’s a statement of our vision for a cleaner, greener future. We’re proud to offer our customers a solution that blends innovation, practicality, and responsibility.”
At the heart of the hybrid is a 1.5L engine, optimised for fuel economy. System output is 255kW and 525Nm. By the look of the snowy photos, it also features AWD.
There are four driving modes – electric, series, parallel, and energy recovery. Pure electric operation occurs at low speeds, ideal for city commutes under 40km/h, while the engine does the main driving at speeds above 80km/h. Range on a single tank is an estimated 1200 kilometres.
The high-performance 18kWh hybrid battery is well protected for durability, impact resistance, and waterproofing. It offers a pure electric range of 90km (WLTP), the battery optimised for urban life and outdoor adventures.
Built with a focus on safety, the battery technology includes rapid-response safety mechanisms, including a two-millisecond power-off protection in the event of a collision.
Specification and pricing will be released closer to the on-sale date in Q1, 2025.
We have asked about Omoda Jaecoo’s plans for the J7 PHEV in New Zealand and they suggest it is coming, and will probably arrive early in Q2 of 2025.
