The new Cannon will be available to order from GWM dealerships in February 2025, with local specifications and pricing confirmed.
The big news is the adoption of the larger 2.4-litre turbodiesel engine shared with Cannon Alpha. It ensures improved performance and permits the necessary 3500kg towing capacity demanded by Kiwi ute buyers.
The Cannon’s new 2.4-litre turbodiesel outputs peak power of 135kW (3600rpm) and 480Nm of torque from 1500-2500rpm. Expect smoother operation and enhanced power delivery across all revs. A Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) optimises output at low and high engine speeds, and minimises turbo lag. The output is handled by GWM’s nine-speed auto.
Overall fuel use is a stated 8.4L/100km, with CO2 emissions are 221g/km. It will be available only in 4×4 Dual Cab Pick-up form, in Lux grade that means increased standard content, new looks and a premium-feel interior that includes additional levels of technology.
Its wellside payload is 995kg. The vehicle itself weighs in at 2230kg wet.
The vehicle dynamics adapt to various conditions via intelligent all-terrain drive modes. These include Normal, Eco, Sport, Snow, Mud, and Sand. A BorgWarner transfer case optimises traction, stability, and performance. An electronically activated rear limited slip differential is standard, for enhanced off-road capability.
Design
The new GWM Cannon features a fresh exterior design that aims to appeal to urban drivers and off-road adventurers alike. Cue muscular wheel arches, sculpted bonnet lines, and a broad stance for a commanding presence. The front features a distinctive grille with a horizontal bar and prominent Cannon badging.
Its tailgate has GWM branding embossed in huge letters. There are also integrated side steps, roof rails, and a sports bar for added style.
Interior
The Cannon interior features soft-touch surfaces on the dashboard and door panels, and a redesigned centre console with fewer buttons for a modern layout. A 12.3-inch touchscreen allows for wireless connectivity with smartphones. The dark interior features contrasting chrome accents, and the steering wheel design is new.
Other elements include an aviation-inspired gear shifter, a smartphone charging pad and USB-A and USB-C ports for charging other devices. Drive modes are controlled by buttons surrounding the shift lever.
Trip data in the instruments can be customised using steering wheel controls.
Safety
The GWM Cannon features seven airbags and a suite of active and passive safety technologies. An ANCAP five-star safety rating issued in 2021 carries over to the 2025 Cannon.
The new Cannon Dual Cap 4×4 Lux carries a sticker price of $43,490 plus ORCs.
