Maybe, because US company has filed a trademark for the name ‘Mach 4’ with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. And Ford boss, Jim Farley, has expressed an interest in additional Mustang-based vehicles. There are rumours of an off-road Mustang as well.
This isn’t the first time that Ford has hinted at the extension of the Mustang name. When the seventh-generation Mustang dropped in 2022, an official sketch showed a four-door version. Half a century earlier, Ford made a prototype four-door Mustang based on the original coupé. But it came to nought.
And of course more recently Ford released its electric Mustang Mach-E. There’s a chance a four-door saloon Mustang could also be electrically powered, although there’s no existing platform for that. A new ‘affordable’ platform is coming in 2027 that might be able to create electric successors to the Fiesta and Focus. But not for bigger saloons.
So more likely it will be ICE power for a four-door Mustang. The company could stretch the current S650 platform, raise and extend the roofline, add a couple of frameless doors and hey presto, a Mustang family car. The turbo four and atmo V8 could both see added service.
Using the 5.0-litre V8 engine that produces 328kW and 540Nm of torque, a four-door Mustang would be a handy rival for the Audi S4, Mercedes C43 or the upcoming BMW Neue Klasse replacement for the M340i.
A sketch of the four-door Mustang suggests it will retain much of the two-door’s aggressiveness, with muscular wheelarches, a low bonnet and a sleek profile.

And the good news for Ford is that there isn’t much in the way of competition for such a vehicle. Most other American four doors in planning seem to be heading down the electric route.
