Lexus continues to grow in New Zealand. It is now the second-highest selling luxury brand in New Zealand based on 2024 vehicle registrations.
Registrations of new Lexus vehicles hit 1328 in 2024, another record for the brand. The growth of Lexus into the number two luxury brand here is largely attributed to the expanding electrified product range. It also reflects an extensive customer benefits package, and an upgraded Lexus dealer network.
The marque has opened a new outlet in Christchurch and another in Auckland. The new Lexus of East Auckland dealership opens in March 2025 along with the relocation of Lexus of Wellington.
Lexus New Zealand Vice President, Andrew Davis, acknowledged the commitment to the brand from the Lexus dealership partners during a tough year economically.
“It has been another incredible year of growth in the Lexus dealer network, with some completing new builds or embarking on substantial renovations.
“We have been delighted in the way our dealership partners have been standing behind the brand. Their commitment has brought overall success.”
The Lexus range of electrified vehicles starts with the recently introduced LBX. It moves through a range of popular SUVs and into high performance coupes. This expansion will continue into 2025 with the addition of the new NX 450h+ Limited. Moreover, the first plug-in hybrid variant in the RX range will debut, along with the limited edition RX 500h Black Line.
“Luxury customers have high expectations on the brands they associate with so there is a lot of competition and now choice in the luxury market.
“We must thank Lexus customers for being discerning and understanding the value and long-term satisfaction that purchasing a new Lexus brings,” Davis said.
“With the introduction of a new plug-in hybrid variant in the RX range, Lexus is continuing to reach more Kiwis than ever before with our multi-pathway approach and powertrain for everyone,” said Davis.
During the year, Lexus launched the urban-oriented LBX hybrid which scored a five-star ANCAP safety rating. At the end of the year, the LBX Morizo RR was added to the line-up. This features a high-performance engine and dynamic all-wheel drive system.
Lexus offers 11 model ranges in New Zealand, nine of which include a hybrid, plug-in hybrid (PHEV) or battery electric (BEV) powertrain.
Sales show that customers have been more than happy with this focus on electrification. Almost 90 per cent of sales in 2024 were electrified. The addition of the PHEV RX 450h+ in early 2025 is expected to add to that high percentage.
Lexus recently celebrated 35 years of operations globally. The NX was the number one selling vehicle in the luxury segment and reached record sales in 2024 with 347 units sold here.
Addendum
Sometimes preliminary figures don’t accord with final tallies.
Our numbers suggest the following:
BMW 1488
Mercedes-Benz 1360
Lexus 1329
However, if the commercial vehicles are removed from the Mercedes figures, then Lexus is indeed number 2 in the local luxury sector after BMW.
