Mercedes-Benz is preparing a compact electric version of its G-Class SUV, as noted earlier. Currently known as “Little G” it is due to launch in 2027, and will compete with vehicles like the upcoming LR Defender Sport.

This new smaller model will offer a more affordable entry point into the G-Class. However, it will retain the rugged, off-road character the nameplate is known for.
The Little G will be electric only, and will not feature the ladder-frame construction of the traditional G-Class. Instead it will use Mercedes’ new MB.EA platform. This will also underpin future electric GLC and C-Class models.
It features a unibody design, 800V electric architecture, and supports the latest fifth-generation battery technology. Expected driving range is around 700km.

For styling, think Mini G. Distinctive design elements include round headlights, rectangular indicators on the front fenders, and flared wheel arches. The nameplate will reportedly feature a lower case “g”.
Despite being the entry-level G-Class, it will have a luxury SUV price tag. That said, it will be considerably more affordable than the existing electric G-Class electric and diesel offerings.
Inside, the Little G will house five occupants and will feature an interior layout that’s different from the rest of the G-Class range. Expect a shallow dashboard, modern infotainment, and a center console similar to that in the forthcoming CLA saloon.

Mercedes’ new eATS 2.0 electric motor will power the Little G. It features a two-speed gearbox for greater efficiency and refinement. In the electric GLC, the system provides up to 360kW as a dual-motor set-up.
Mercedes is working on a new all-wheel-drive system for the Little G. It is designed to mimic the G-Class’s three mechanical differential locks through software, giving it proper off-road capability. It will ride on air suspension with variable ride height, likely adapted from the GLC’s double-wishbone front and multilink rear set-up.
Performance variants from Mercedes-AMG are already in development, with a launch expected a year later. These versions will use AMG’s upcoming axial-flux electric motors. They are set to debut in the new CLA 45 and GT SUV.

Mercedes’ decision to expand the G-Class sub-brand is in response to a surge in global demand for rugged, off-road oriented vehicles, especially in China. New off-road-focused sub-brands from Chinese manufacturers like BYD, Chery, and Dongfeng are increasingly popular. Similarly, the success of the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler 4xe in the U.S. has highlighted growing interest in lifestyle 4x4s.
By introducing the Little G, Mercedes aims to blend traditional off-road appeal with modern electric technology, making the G-Class concept more accessible. It will also likely appeal to a new generation of environmentally conscious, adventure-ready drivers.
