KTM celebrated 30 years of Duke this year, introducing the 990 model in 2024. We first rode the original Duke 990 around 2006. Now it is the turn of the feistier R version, bringing an even sharper blade to the knife fight. The more focused 990 Duke R is the most aggressive middleweight made by KTM. It is optimised for use on both road and track. They’re calling it the Punisher, I guess because it’s a wee marvel.
It features heritage colours, like the orange gloss powder-coated frame, along with an identifying ‘R’ on the tank.

A new 8.9-inch TFT touchscreen, amongst the widest we’ve seen on a bike, features a split screen mode for greater legibility. There’s also a new switch cube layout, connectivity unit, a map navigation system, and customizable ride modes. New for the R are Sport ABS and Supermoto+ ABS, for riders who are okay with the rear wheel having a mind of its own.
In comparison to the standard KTM 990 Duke, the R version’s LC8c 947cc engine now boasts an additional 7hp, up from 121hp to 128hp, with torque the same at 103Nm. The additional power comes from an engine remap.
Fully adjustable WP Apex suspension features at each end, the Open Cartridge fork offering 143mm of travel. Fork diameter is also up from 143mm to 148mm, and settings are 34 per cent stiffer for a sportier feel. Expect a better controlled, more planted feel, without losing any of the base bike’s agility.
The R model weighs the same as the regular Duke 990 at 193kg wet. Ergos are a bit different because seat height and ground clearance are 15mm higher in the R with its extra suspension travel. There’s three degrees more lean angle possible while frame and swingarm changes add mechanical grip.
Slowing the show are Brembo Stylema monobloc calipers and a Brembo MCS master cylinder. These clamp onto larger size discs (320mm vs 300mm up front). KTM says the update (from J.Juan brakes) means more precision under heavy braking. Adding to the braking performance are Michelin Power Cup 2 tyres, on rims borrowed from the 1390 Super Duke R.
The new 990 Duke R will be available at KTM dealers in New Zealand from May 2025 by which time specs and prices will be to hand.
The 2024 Duke 990 is $21,499 so we’d expect the R model to be closer to $25k with its more exotic components.
