From November 30th you will no longer be able to get black license plates with silver letters.
Black numberplates with silver text are being discontinued from 01.11.24. You must request the manufacture of these plates by 30.11.24
Black plates were made available to the public just over two years ago. It’s believed this decision was made due to the difficulty of reading the plates, especially for speed cameras. People who currently have these plates needn’t worry as a recall isn’t planned for existing plates.
Waka Kotahi has stated that “In certain conditions (i.e. in change of light and at certain viewing angles), the black background plates are unable to be read accurately by the human eye.”
It’s unknown yet if Kiwi Plates who manufactures the plates is working on a new design that is more legible.
