Following the release of the updated BMW 1 Series earlier this year, now comes the refreshed BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe. While the platform isn’t new BMW says there is enough novel technology to consider this a generational update.
The F74 generation replaces the F44, and will come up against Audi A3 Saloon and the Mercedes CLA.
In the UK, there will be two models from its early 2025 launch, the 220 M Sport and the M235 xDrive.
The design of the new 2 Series Gran Coupe is fresh and will require another round of crash testing. It comes with the same front end as the new 1 Series with a wider grille shape and thinner headlights. This gives it a more aggressive and aero-optimised look.
In profile there’s a new ‘Hofmeister kink’ in the rear pillar, which now has a ‘2’ identifier. Fresh taillights add to a sportier look at the rear. Gloss black detailing on the exterior is a feature of the M Sport package which also includes 18-inch wheels, an M Sport bodykit and a rear spoiler. Nineteen-inch rims are an option.
The cabin mimics that of the new 1 Series. There’s a 10.7-inch touchscreen and a 10.25-inch driver’s display. A new steering wheel has physical buttons while a redesigned centre console goes iDrive-less. The infotainment is based on the new OS9 system from BMW.
Both variants get a 12-o’clock marker on the steering wheel, stitching in M colours throughout the cabin, and sports seats with optional massage functions. Boot space is 430 litres, which is 130 litres more than the 1 Series can offer.
Powering things for the 220 is BMW’s new 1.5-litre mild hybrid, three-cylinder petrol engine that drives the front wheels via a seven-speed auto. In 220 specification it produces 125kW and 280Nm of torque, resulting in a 0-100 time of 7.8sec.
BMW has updated the chassis set-up with new shock absorbers and dampers, revised bushings and a recalibrated traction control system.
The other variant, the M235, uses a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine generating 221kW and 400Nm of torque for a 0-100km/h time approaching five seconds. BMW’s xDrive system on the M235 features a mechanical diff lock for the front wheels. The uprated front brakes comes courtesy of the M3 and M4. Other M235 items include a head-up display, Alcantara M Sport seats and a quad-tip exhaust system.
Nine paint finishes are available, with the option to specify the roof in a contrasting gloss black colour.
