The next iX3 from BMW is completing hot weather testing in South Africa ahead of the SUV’s likely September reveal this year.

It is the second-generation iX3 but the first new BMW to ride on the Gen6 platform. This promises significant improvements in range, functionality and cost.
The latest iX3 will feature a more compact double kidney grille, moving away from the large polarising visages of current models. Flush-fitting door handles, a raked screen and aero wheels will contribute to enhanced efficiency and range.

Inside, the iX3 will feature BMW’s latest cockpit design dubbed ‘Panoramic iDrive’. This comprises a broad display that stretches across the base of the windscreen, replacing traditional instruments. A sizeable 17.9-inch central touchscreen is a trapezoidal shape, designed so no controls are out of reach. Expect no rotary iDrive-type control dial.
Due to launch next year, it will compete against the upcoming electric GLC and the Audi Q6 e-tron. Soon after, an electric BMW 3 Series saloon will follow, along with a new X5. An electric M3 is due in 2027.

BMW has confirmed the Gen 6 platform will have an 800V electrical architecture for rapid charging (300km of range added in 10min). It can accommodate batteries that are 20 per cent more energy-dense than today’s packs. That should boost range by up to 30 per cent to over 560km, and reduce energy consumption by as much as 25 per cent.

The platform also makes use of lighter and more efficient motors, accommodating up to four in the most potent of BMW’s new EVs. The iX3 is likely to offer single- (rear mounted) or dual-motor powertrains initially.

The combustion-engined BMW X3, the firm’s best seller globally, will continue to sell alongside the new iX3. Now in its fourth generation, it launched in June last year with petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains.
