Following the reveal of the facelifted X5 and X6 earlier this month, BMW has unveiled M Competition variants for both models which introduce 48V mild-hybrid technology to the brand.
Before we get to the electrified powerhouse of both performance SUVs though, its worth noting their new XM-inspired looks. The M Competition pair make use of new matrix LED headlights which flank a blacked out and square-shaped kidney grille.
Carbon fibre options are available for the wing mirror caps and rear spoiler while a rear diffuser dominates the lower portion of the rear-end, highlighting the quad-exit exhaust. Both models come with standard 21-inch alloy wheels up front and 22-inch units at the rear.
Attention has also been paid to the interior of which features BMW’s curved display, seamlessly integrating the driver’s 12.3-inch screen and a central 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen together. A sports steering wheel with carbon shift paddles and M sports seats are complemented by an abundance of M logos inside.
With sharper looks comes sharper power delivery with the latest generation of 48V hybrid technology assisting the 8-cylinder lump under the bonnet.
An electric motor has been integrated into the eight-speed automatic transmission’s housing, providing an extra 9kW and 200Nm of torque. It also acts as a crankshaft-mounted starter generator which gets its energy from a 48V battery housed in the engine compartment and can be recharged under braking and overrun.
As for petrol power, the updated twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 now features a reinforced crankshaft, enhanced turbos, a new air intake duct and an optimised oil supply system and oil separation process.
Both the X5 M Competition and X6 M Competition generate 460kW and 750Nm which is supplied to all four wheels, enabling a 0 to 100km/h sprint time of 3.9 seconds. An Active M Differential also sits on the rear axle.
The adaptive suspension can be stiffened in the name of sportiness but can also be adapted to suit a more comfortable ride alongside sharper steering.
We await to hear about local availability for the new BMW X5 M Competition and X6 M Competition.
