We live in an era where internal combustion engines are downsizing, if not being phased out to make way for new electric models. However, it doesn’t sound like the folks over at Bugatti have got the memo yet as they’ve just revealed their next engine, a great big fire-breathing V16 hybrid.
This will come as a welcome surprise for many considering the French carmaker announced it would discontinue the 8.0-litre quad-turbo W16 in 2021. With that in mind, the last thing we were expecting was for it to drum up another 16-cylinder.
Alas, here we are looking at what will power the brand’s next hypercar with the main differences being the engine’s V arrangement and the addition of a hybrid system. Judging from the teaser video, it looks like it’ll receive quad turbocharging too.
“This year, eight years to the day since the Chiron was revealed, Bugatti shows the world the first page of the newest chapter in its rich history,” says Bugatti.
“In June, the modern-day lineage of Bugatti – first established with the Veyron 16.4 – will welcome its latest evolution; a new automotive pinnacle with a V16 hybrid powertrain at its heart. Incomparable in every detail, it is a pure embodiment of Bugatti’s DNA.”
We have yet to be told how much power and torque the new powertrain makes, but we have been given a sound clip of it banging through gears to mull over before its grand reveal in June. We strongly urge you to have a listen in the video below.
