BYD has released a compact electric SUV, the Atto 2, that will rival the likes of MG’s second-gen ZS EV.
Expect the base model to have a range of around 310km but a bigger battery version is also coming.
The Atto 2 launched in China last year. Another newcomer to debut at the 2025 Brussels Motor Show, the Atto 2 will be BYD’s most affordable electric SUV yet. Like all BYDs, you can expect a generous level of standard specification. The various models will differ only in things like motor and battery size.

Atto 2 will ride on the e-Platform 3.0 that also underpins Atto 3 and Dolphin hatchback. It will fill the size gap between these two existing offerings.
Single model initially
The battery is fully integrated within the car’s chassis to improve interior packaging and boost body rigidity and safety.
At launch, the Atto 2 will be available with a 45.1kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery. This will power the 130kW front-mounted electric motor. BYD says this combination allows for over 300km of range from a single charge, and 460km of urban motoring. A zero to 100 time of under 8sec is promised. Maximum charge speed is unclear.
A long-range version of the Atto 2 is also coming, likely with a 60kWh battery and range in excess of 400km. However like-sized Kia EV3 offers up to 600km.
Design highlights
The design features flowing LED headlights and black bar with silver trim up front, along with a full-width light bar at the rear. Taillights have a number eight shape, which the Chinese say is good for luck.
There’s also a floating roof design, black plastic cladding for that can-do aesthetic, flush door handles and air curtains up front to channel air appropriately. Grey is the standard hue, though green, white and black are cost options.
The Atto 2 features a large central infotainment touchscreen that rotates, like in other BYDs, while the driver gets an 8.8-inch digital instrument panel. The centre console has some physical buttons for items like the windscreen demister and drive mode selector, a crystal gear selector and grab handles. There’s also a panoramic glass roof above.
The interior is fairly minimalist to help make the Atto 2 as affordable as possible.
Key physical features
The Atto 2 is 4310mm long, 1830mm wide and 1675mm tall. It rides on a 2620mm wheelbase and has seating for five. Atto 2’s 400-litre boot capacity expands to 1340 litres with the rear seats folded away. The resulting floor space is completely flat.
To date, the pricing for Atto 2 is unclear but expect it to be north of Dolphin, and south of Atto 3, if it turns up here, as is likely.
