After persistent rumours, it’s been confirmed that BYD Auto will launch in New Zealand in the third quarter this year. However juicy details on pricing are still to be revealed. The first model offered will be the all-electric Atto 3, pre-orders for which will open next month. Two versions will be available, with WLTP-rated ranges of 320kms and 420kms.
Warren Willmot, Brand Manager for BYD New Zealand said; “Specific vehicle and dealer information will be released shortly, however, we can confirm the Atto 3 will be eligible for the current full EV Clean Car Rebate of $8,625.
“There has already been significant enquiry regarding BYD vehicles in New Zealand and prospective buyers are invited to register their interest online at www.bydauto.co.nz.”
According to the website, the Atto 3 is 4.4m long with a 2720mm wheelbase and 440L of luggage space. It has a single 150kW/310Nm motor powering the front axle. There are two battery capacities offered; the 50kWh unit provides a 320km range while the 60kWh model is rated at 420km.
Standard features include a panoramic sunroof, a one-touch open/close tailgate and high beam assist for the LED headlights. Inside is a 12.8-inch touchscreen, a five-inch digital instrument panel, synthetic leather trim, a 360-degree view monitor, smart key, and a wireless phone charger.
Active safety is well covered with Lane Departure Warning, Stop & Go Full Speed Adaptive Cruise Control with Automatic Emergency Braking System, Front and Rear Collision Warning and Blind Spot Monitoring. The warranty period looks good too with cover for six years / 150,000km while the battery has a warranty of eight years / 160,000kms.
Next year, two further EV models will join the New Zealand line-up followed in 2024 by another EV and a PHEV. So expect five different models by 2025.
The new electric brand will be represented here by Ateco Automotive NZ, which also handles the Jeep, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Maserati and Ram brands. The local distributor calls BYD Auto ‘a multinational, high-tech company recognised as the largest producer of New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in the world, with a product portfolio incorporating electric and plug-in hybrid cars, buses, trucks, sky-rail, forklifts and cutting-edge rechargeable battery production’.
