The BYD Shark, what will be New Zealand’s first plug-in hybrid ute, was revealed this week at the big agricultural show in the Waikato.
It was introduced as the Shark 6, hinting that we might see other variants of the ute at some point.
BYD New Zealand reckoned the Shark’s arrival heralds a sea change in the market as we know it.

Brand manager, Warren Willmot, said “Today represents a sea change in the way that New Zealand’s most popular vehicle, the ute, is powered. Utes are not dead, but the way they have previously been powered is.” He mentioned the phrase ‘dirty diesel’ during his presentation.
Even transport minister, Simeon Brown, was impressed with the new Shark saying at the unveiling that it ‘meets the needs of so many New Zealand farmers and businesses’.
A pity it won’t be any cheaper for those under pressure businesses with the scrapping of the Clean Car Discount.
No word on pricing yet, expect this and specification to be announced in September.
You can place your order for a BYD Shark 6 at dealerships now and the first customers are likely to see them before Christmas.
