Clean Car Penalties reduced

After a failure of consultations with MoT, VIA made vigorous representations to Transport Minister the Hon Michael Wood, who arranged for Cabinet to review the “Clean Car Penalties” for used vehicles.

VIA is pleased to advise that as a result of these representations the penalties for used vehicles have been reduced by 25% and the maximum penalty capped at 50% of new vehicles.

The maximum rebate of $8625 for new imports and $3450 for used imports continues unchanged until further notice.

The per-gram fee on high emission used import vehicles has been reduced to 75% that of brand-new vehicles, which more closely aligns with the original policy design.

The maximum cap on fees is $2875 on used imports and $5175 on brand new vehicles.

Calculators will be available online to determine rebates and fees

• The calculator at dealer.rightcar.govt.nz has been updated for dealers.
• A consumer-facing online calculator will be available mid-March at www.rightcar.govt.nz.

Exclusions will apply to:

• Special Interest Vehicles;
• Vehicles 40 years or older when they enter New Zealand;
• Disability vehicles;
• Motorsport vehicles; and
• Low volume vehicles.
