The latest Mini John Cooper Works performance petrol models join electric siblings in the brand’s expanding line-up. The JCW Convert is not a starter in New Zealand, however, when the others dot down here in Autumn next year.
The Mini JCW hatchback and Cabriolet launch with the same design and engineering updates as the standard Mini Cooper, only they are paired with a 170kW/380Nm 2.0T engine. That’s the same unit as in the previous generation, though this one makes 60Nm more torque. However, Mini says it is no quicker than its forebear, in part because of a 30kg weight gain (0-100 claim of 6.1sec). That time compares with a 5.9sec sprint for the 190kW JCW E.
The ICE version uses a twin-scroll turbocharger to improve low-rev response and impart a flat torque curve. The 2.0T is connected to a dual-clutch transmission only. Its output spins the front wheels. Mini’s Cowley plant in the UK will build these models.
Mini reckons on mean fuel economy of 6.5L/100km for the JCW hatch. It also mentions a top speed of just under 250km/h. There are no significant suspension or chassis changes because Mini would have mentioned these had there been any. So expect the more focused set-up of the previous car, paired with a larger brake package, including red brake calipers.
The exterior design of the JCW features a two-tone black and red paint job, a more aggressive front bumper with red highlights and a larger, more open octagonal grille. At the rear is a diffuser and wing, and an exposed exhaust pipe with a single outlet integrated into the rear bumper garnish. There’s no bonnet scoop of yore. Wheels are 17- and 18-inch JCW numbers.
Darker, sportier fabrics feaure on the JCW seats, doors and dashboard. The latter finish is black and red cloth with a chequered-flag pattern. There’s also a sports steering wheel, with left and right paddle shifters. The floating OLED display not only controls all the car’s major functions, but also acts as the main driver instrument. A head-up display is standard with augmented reality integration of the navigation system.
The petrol-powered JCW will join its electric sib alongside the five-door Aceman. Whether an even hotter variant is coming to rival GR Yaris is unclear.
All three JCW variants will go on sale here in Q2 2025 when pricing will also be to hand.
