The New Zealand Government has announced that it will scrap the Clean Car Discount on 31 December 2023, bringing with it several key changes for car buyers.
Following the announcement, the Imported Motor Vehicle Industry Association (VIA) issued an alert regarding what to expect come the end of the year.
First things first, no fees or rebates will be applied to new or used vehicles after 31 January 2023.
If you have purchased a vehicle eligible for a rebate, you must submit your application on the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) website before 11:59 pm on 31 December 2023 to receive it.
It’s also important to note that NZTA will no longer be able to pay rebates after 31 January 2024 and there will be no exceptions made for this.
“If an application is incomplete and/or requires follow-up, then it’s at risk of missing the payment deadline of 31 January 2023.
“NZTA can’t pay rebates after 31 January 2024, regardless of cause.”
Vehicles registered up to and on 31 December 2023 that are eligible for a fee will be required to pay at the time of registration.
“Incorrect registrations completed in December 2023, seeking correction in 2024, will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Refunding of CCD fees won’t be automatic.”
Cars and trucks on dealership lots will be required to display new Vehicle Emissions and Energy Economy Labels (VEEEL) with no Clean Car Discount information from the start of next year.
Online vehicle listings will also need to have their Clean Car Discount information removed by 1 January 2024.
