Bronwyn and Paul Walbran are officially the first Kiwis to drive away in MG’s new electric sports car, the Cyberster.
They recently took delivery of their new two-seater baby, resplendent in Diamond Red Metallic. Giltrap MG Dealer Principal, Scott Hobson, handed it over personally.
The couple are long-time MG devotees, so this is not their first model. Paul is a 55-year member of the Auckland MG Car Club. He is also the name behind ‘Paul Walbran Motors,’ a New Lynn garage that specialises in historic MG models. So he has history with the brand.
Mr Walbran said “This is the twelfth MG we have owned. It’s been fascinating to witness the transition of the brand from our 1939 WA Saloon across the decades in between to the very latest and greatest we have here today.”
By which he means the fully electric Cyberster, a two-seater convertible. Featuring scissor doors, it can also scorch to 100 in just over three seconds.
The Walbrans are serious fans of the octagon brand. “I bought my first MG in the mid-1960’s and there has been a model from the marque in our garage ever since,” said Mr Walbran.

“Also equally impressive is the evolution to full-electric motoring. It has happened in such a relatively short period of time and the rate of change is simply astounding.
“The Cyberster is a beauty to behold and it is a car that is going to be driven and enjoyed.”
The Walbran’s MG Cyberster is the first to arrive in New Zealand for customer deliveries.
MG Motor New Zealand Chief Operating Officer, Harrie Yan, commented “The level of interest in MG Cyberster is absolutely incredible. I’ve been lucky enough to have driven a pre-series vehicle around Auckland recently. I have been amazed at the number of people taking photos of the new model” he added.
“We have always said it is a groundbreaking new addition that represents a major leap forward in both technology and design. If the levels of attention in it are anything to go by then the team have got this vehicle absolutely spot on.
“It’s an exciting new halo model to recognise a century of the MG marque and, at the same time, announce the start of a new era.”
