You would be hard-pressed to find many cars fitted with a V12 these days, especially in naturally aspirated flavour, but Ferrari has confirmed that their Ferrari Purosangue SUV will be a “pure V12 model.”
The mention of “pure” also suggests the new SUV won’t feature a hybrid system either.
In what is a break from the norm, Ferrari is pitting the Purosangue against rivals like the Lamborghini Urus, Aston Martin DBX, and Bentley Bentayga which each use turbocharged V8s.
The V12 point of difference is sure to attract buyers wanting to be seen as ‘different’ in an already saturated SUV market but, they’ll have to contend with each other to get their hands on one as Ferrari says the Purosangue will remain under 20 per cent of its yearly sales.
This is a stark contrast to brands like Lamborghini who’s Urus SUV accounts for 60 per cent of the brand’s overall sales.
While we’re yet to find out any performance figures of the new SUV, Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna maintains that the vehicle is a “true sports car.”
“I would like to reply with something I heard from a customer yesterday that saw the Purosangue. It was two customers, one a customer of Ferrari for 13 years, the other one a recent customer of three years,” Vigna told investors.
“The comment that he said was that… this is a sports car, because when you think about a utility vehicle, you think about something that is big, that is heavy. The comment of both these gentlemen that this is a sports car.”
The Italian manufacturer has reaffirmed its commitment to launching the new SUV in September 2022.
