Ford’s 2024 results are out and it sold 51,745 Mustang Mach-Es compared with and 44,003 gasoline Mustangs. That’s a year-on-year increase of 27 per cent for the Mach-E, and a decrease of 10 per cent for the petrol-powered Mustang.
Only the Ford remains available as a V8 pony car after Camaro and Challenger production ended in 2023. The Mustang just completed its first year of production after a full redesign.
Evidently there were supply issues with the four-pot engine for Mustang which kept inventories low. The same happened in 2021 when there was a global chip shortage.
However, the Mach-E has sold well since its introduction in 2021. Ford also started delivering the Mach-E soon after the Tesla Model Y launch, helping to position it as a viable alternative. The company has remained committed to volume production ever since.
The Mach-E has also proven itself as a product. Many prefer its design to that of the Model Y which doesn’t resonate with everyone. And Green Car Reports felt it was a better drive as well, the outlet voting it the Best Car To Buy 2021. However, in a 2023 NZ Autocar comparison the like-priced Kia EV6 edged the Mach-E, both as RWD variants.
The Mach-E had some updates for the 2024 model year rather than a full redesign. A Rally grade model was also added to the line-up.
Ford’s electric F-150 Lightning full-sized pick-up hasn’t been quite as successful. It shares the gasoline model’s badge and chassis. Production of the Lightning paused recently, despite good sales early in 2024. Overall, it comprises less than four per cent of overall F-150 sales.
