GWM New Zealand has confirmed that its affordable fully electric Ora is being recalled over concerns that the vehicle may induce an electrical shock when it is being unplugged from a charger.
“Due to a programming issue, if the operator removes the charging cable without cancelling the charge, an electrical arc between the charging plug and the vehicle may occur,” the recall notice lodged with the Department of Infrastructure in Australia states.
“If an electrical arc comes into contact with the operator or bystanders it will increase the risk of serious injury or death.”
The issue was first reported in Australia, affecting 1659 vehicles, while an official notice is expected for New Zealand as the brand is working through the finer details.
A spokesperson from the local arm of GWM confirmed to EVs & Beyond that the recall applies to approximately 523 vehicles sold here.
All that is needed to fix the problem is a software update.
The Ora became New Zealand’s most affordable EV after the brand slashed its prices in October, undercutting the MG4.
Prices begin at $42,990, a $5k drop on the original price. When the Clean Car Discount rebate is applied, the Ora effectively costs $35,975.
