Formula 1 reserve driver Liam Lawson has ticked another item off his bucket list by getting behind the wheel of a Ford Mustang Gen3 Supercar for the first time.
The car was prepped by Blanchard Racing Team and performed a series of demonstration runs at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne yesterday with childhood hero James Courtney by his side.
The 22-year-old has long been a fan of the Australian driver, having picked the same race number as Courtney’s 2010 title-winning car – 18 – when he started racing in karting.
Following the demo run, Lawson compared the differences between the Supercar and a Formula 1 car, citing that the former was “much more enjoyable”.
Lawson also told Supercars that he was keen to take part in the Bathurst 1000 as a co-driver in the future.
“Yeah, like a co-driver thing would be amazing to do if I could jump in one day. That’s definitely the dream,” he told Supercars.
However, Courtney reckons he could’ve jumped in the car for yesterday afternoon’s race if he wanted to.
“He knows what he’s doing. It’s got pedals, a steering wheel, it’s all the same sort of principles. Just the car’s just a bit heavier,” said Courtney.
Supercars heads back to New Zealand next month for its inaugural visit to Taupō at the ITM Taupō Super400, held from April 19 to 21. Fans who have not yet secured a ticket are encouraged to do so soon as limited passes are available.
