The Volkswagen ID.3 and ID.4 are expected to look rather different in 2026, showcasing a new design language. This was first revealed by the ID.2All concept (below).
Both will reuse the existing MEB platform but with numerous updates to the design, technology and interior.
VW’s development boss,Kai Grünitz, told Auto Express at the LA show: “We will bring a re-skin for the ID.4 and ID.3, with a completely new design language going back to where we originally came from….”
VW’s chief designer, Andy Mindt, developed the future design language. His first design to take to the streets is the production version of the ID.2All concept, due in H2 of 2025.
This is a two-box shape, with simple design features and a sense of solidity.
Kai continued: “We also have a lot of improvements in terms of battery costs and performance. We will also bring new features and driver assistance functions. So there will be a huge improvement, both in terms of the cost for us, but also benefit for the customers.”
Expect a return of many physical buttons on the dash and centre console. VW indicates an uplift in interior build quality.
The MEB platform features a rear-drive layout and multilink rear suspension. Front-mounted motors and torsion beam rear suspension are reserved for the MEB Entry models.
The new SSP platform design is ongoing, with developments stemming from its new joint venture with Rivian. Initial models using this platform are due out in 2027.
