Mazda New Zealand has announced that production of the CX-8 will cease at the end of this year, making way for the next generation of the brand’s SUVs.
It’s not all doom and gloom though, as Kiwis will still be able to purchase the seven-seat model during the early stages of 2024 as the brand sells off the remainder of its stock.
Taking its place will be the incoming CX-80, which will sit alongside the CX-60 and CX-90 after it launches sometime early next year.
With regard to the MX-30, Mazda New Zealand will continue to offer the model in both hybrid and fully electric form, unlike in Australia where it will be removed from the line-up full stop.
The decision to axe the CX-8 but keep the MX-30 comes as Mazda ramps up its commitment to electrification with its entire fleet expected to be made up of hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and fully electric vehicles by 2030.
“[The MX-30] remains a part of the local range particularly as we continue a transition to an electrified fleet,” a Mazda New Zealand spokesperson told us.
“With New Zealand’s CO2 regulations and effects of the Clean Car Programme, the acceptance and uptake of electrified vehicles remains strong.”
