These days it seems every supercar manufacturer is dipping their toes into the SUV market with high powered, luxury mall crawlers.
It’s now McLaren’s turn having announced their contribution to the highly profitable SUV segment with an all-electric model destined for launch by 2030.
The brand-new super SUV will only be available with battery electric power as countless nations and government bodies are pushing for an end to internal combustion engine production by the mid 2030s.
McLaren is believed to be producing a single model at first but could expand into further models and trim levels down the road.
We can expect the SUV to come in either a dual or tri-motor offering with a four-wheel-drive layout.
Having previously declared it won’t stray outside of producing supercars and hypercars, McLaren have contradicted themselves in light of rivals’ success in the highly profitable SUV segment.
SUVs like the Lamborghini Urus outsold the likes of the two-seat Huracan in 2021, two to one. Porsche’s success in the segment is one to be marveled at as well with the Macan and Cayenne accounting for well over half of the German company’s 300,000 sales when the 911 accounted for just 38,464 in 2021.
Other brand’s like Ferrari are also introducing an SUV offering with their Purosangue, also contradicting their previous super and hypercar production intentions.
Currently, McLaren has made no official comment about its SUV plans, although insiders have acknowledged “an appetite for the idea”.
