The next AMG model due out is the CLE 63, the go-fast version of the four-seater coupe pictured above. And it’s good news for lovers of the bent eight as the car will be powered by a new version of AMG’s 4.0-litre V8.
AMG tried to convince loyal C 63 owners that a tech-fest four-cylinder hybrid would deliver the sort of enjoyment they had loved for the past couple of decades. But it failed to fire and it resulted in poor sales around the world for one of AMG’s best selling models. And so Mercedes-AMG will return to V8 power, confirming an all-new mild-hybrid petrol engine will debut in the upcoming CLE 63 later this year. It is expected that this new V8 will find its way into a revised C 63 next year as well.

The new engine is a thorough development of the firm’s 4.0-litre twin turbo unit, and while details on outputs and consumption are yet to be revealed, rumours suggest the new V8 will switch to a freer revving, flat-plane crankshaft design. That will likely alter the soundtrack of the 63, but the improved response and sky high rev limit should more than compensate. Hopefully Mercedes-AMG doesn’t try to add any fake synthesised sound track to try to alter its aural outputs.
It’s said the flat-plane design also makes for more compact engine dimensions, meaning more space for hybrid bits with an ISG type of device likely to be added in the name of efficiency.
As for the CLE 63, expect the usual pumped up styling, suspension tweaks, a million drive modes, switchable AWD and a big thirst for hydrocarbons.
