It’s one of the most popular models in the history of Mercedes-AMG. And it is a cult favourite in suburbs like Herne Bay and Remuera, has been for decades.
Now the latest Mercedes-AMG G 63 brings electrically-boosted performance, a new multimedia system, extra off-road driving features, and more personalisation options than ever.
The Geländewagen, or G-Class, has been in production since 1979. Its toughness and mountain goat abilities are rarely noticed in the wilds. However, in the posh parts of town this can often be seen and heard. That’s in part because the cost of entry here is $343,900.
The latest version of the AMG G 63 features a 430kW/850Nm 4.0L biturbo V8 boosted further by an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) featuring a 48-volt electrical system. That adds 15kW and 200Nm to the tally, and ensures a 0-100 time of 4.3sec using Race Start (a.k.a. launch control).
For 2025, AMG has tweaked the G 63’s suspension for a better combination of agility and comfort. Optional AMG Active Ride Control suspension ($9000) features hydraulic stabilisers that counteract body roll movement. In off-road situations, this system offers greater stability and improved axle articulation, increasing traction and climbing ability. There’s also adjustable adaptive damping at each wheel.
The new Mercedes-AMG G 63 now includes the MBUX multimedia system. It features satellite navigation with augmented reality (AR). Via MBUX, occupants can also access the Burmester 3D surround sound system. Users can direct MBUX via the central touchscreen, a new touchpad in the centre console, or via a haptic controller mounted on the steering wheel.
Another G-Class first is the inclusion of Keyless-Go as part of the standard Comfort Package which also includes wireless charging and temperature-controlled cupholders.
When heading off the beaten track, the driver can now select from eight driving modes. A Transparent Bonnet feature provides a virtual projection of the ground conditions beneath and in front of the vehicle. This is also handy to avoid garking alloys while parking near curbs.
Subtle style enhancements
A raft of subtle styling updates includes revised air intakes on the front bumper set with three vertical louvres, and a new bonnet badge with the AMG crest. There’s also a small spoiler lip on the roof edge at the rear, and a silver-chrome fuel filler cap with the AMG logo.
The G63 now comes with 22-inch AMG cross-spoke forged alloys, and an external black-out package. AMG brake callipers are painted red, or black, your no-cost choice. Side running boards and a spare wheel mounted on the rear door are also standard spec.
Cabin fittings include an AMG Performance steering wheel with a drive mode controller, Burmester sounds and a sliding glass sunroof. In the centre console is open pore ash wood with a piano black lacquer finish.
There’s also self parking, a 360°camera, and the usual Driving Assistance systems plus alarm.
For off roading, there’s a trio of differential locks, and three dedicated off-road modes. Back on tarmac, there are four drive modes, along with user-selectable adjustable adaptive damping.
