Three popular Mitsubishi models will continue in New Zealand despite being suddenly cut across the Tasman.
Starting March 1, 2025, new Australian Design Rules (ADR) will kick in, forcing Mitsubishi to drop the ASX, Eclipse Cross, Eclipse Cross PHEV, and Pajero Sport from its Aussie lineup.
Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited (MMAL) says it would’ve been too costly to redesign these vehicles for the new rules, given where they are in their product cycle.
First built in its current form in 2010, the ASX is close to being able to get its driver’s license, while the Eclipse is eight years old and the Pajero Sport ten.
That still doesn’t stop them being popular, particularly the ASX, which has long attracted buyers looking for a solid all-rounder at a value price. The Eclipse found a new round of fans in 2023 thanks to its plug-in hybrid option.
Mitsubishi Motors New Zealand (MMNZ) confirms the ADR changes won’t affect Kiwi car buyers. The current ASX, Eclipse Cross, Eclipse Cross PHEV, and Pajero Sport will remain on sale here.
A new Pajero Sport is due next year, according to reports, while Aussies will get a Renault Captur-based replacement for the ASX. There is no replacement imminent for the Eclipse.
