BMW’s heavily updated third-generation 1 Series hatch we previewed midyear. It has now arrived in New Zealand, available in FWD and AWD versions.
The baby Bimmer brings fresh styling, powertrains, advanced driving functions, digital solutions and an expanded specification list. The company is calling it a fourth-generation model, the changes being that significant.
Initially there are two models, a 120 as the entry variant and the M135 xDrive as the flagship. The sticker prices are $68,900 and $97,900 respectively.
Nomenclature changes, the ‘i’ which formerly stood for injected dropping out because that letter will henceforth be reserved for electric BMW models. The 120 features a 125kW/240Nm three-cylinder turbopetrol allied to a 48-volt mild hybrid set-up. A seven-speed twin-clutch auto sends power to the front wheels.
The M135 xDrive uses a 221kW/400Nm turbopetrol connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, with output going to all four wheels. It can evidently run from 0-100km/h in 4.9sec.
The dynamic and sporty aura of the 1 Series is emphasised by its long bonnet, a rearward set to the passenger cell, dynamically flowing roofline and a squat rear end. Overall length increases by 42mm to 4361mm and height by 25mm to 1459mm. Vehicle width is 1800mm and it rides on a wheelbase that’s 2670mm long. Pick the M135 xDrive by its M radiator grille with horizontal bars, M exterior mirror caps and quad exhaust tailpipes.
Inside, there’s room for five in the leather-free interior. New seats offer extra comfort and support, while multiple upholstery options are available.
There’s also a new steering wheel and gear selector, and a BMW Curved Display that integrates a 10.25-inch IFT Display and 10.7-inch instrument display. You’ll notice fewer buttons, with climate control part of the IFT screen. BMW iDrive features a new operating system for simpler control of vehicle functions. QuickSelect widgets enable direct access to functions without the need to switch to a submenu.
Dynamics step up with increased body structure rigidity, new shock absorber tech, and added front wheel caster. BMW claims enhanced agility, steering precision and cornering dynamics.
The BMW 120 rides on 18-inch alloys, while the M135 xDrive features 19s. Both get active cruise and the M135 xDrive features Driving Assistant Professional which adds Steering and Lane Control Assistant. Other standard items include adaptive LED lights, adaptive M suspension, head-up display, powered seats and fifth door, surround view camera, a Qi charger and heating for the sports seats up front.
The M135 adds lumbar and massage functions, HK premium sounds, a panoramic glass roof, and a steering wheel heater. There are several options packages as well. Two solid paintwork finishes, seven metallic finishes and four BMW Individual paint finishes are available. The M135 xDrive features a gloss black roof paint finish.
