There are signs of life in the new vehicle market. The number of registrations in September increased 5.4 per cent compared with last year, to 8588 units, up from 8150.
In the passenger vehicle segment (cars and SUVs) the market leader, Toyota, enjoyed a good month, with sales up 18 per cent in September to 2238, due to improved supply and daily rental deliveries.
In second place, Mitsubishi was up 37.6 per cent on last September’s totals, with 1112 units, followed by Kia on 814 units (an increase of 138 per cent) and Ford recorded 604 registrations. Rounding out the top ten for the month, Suzuki had 359 registrations, followed by MG with 337, Hyundai with 336, Mazda with 333, Nissan with 317, and Volkswagen with 210.

In the passenger vehicle market, the Toyota Yaris Cross was a distant second on 384 units, followed by the Mitsubishi ASX on 379 units. Other top sellers were the Kia Seltos with 370 units, the Mitsubishi Outlander (362), Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (291), Toyota Corolla (266), Ford Everest (212), Nissan Leaf (202), and the Suzuki Swift (178).
New commercial registrations up 15 per cent
New commercial vehicle registrations were up 15 per cent in September 2024 to 3187 units from 2759 in 2023.
Ford was the market leader with 1061 newly registered commercial vehicles. It was followed by Toyota (764), Mitsubishi (271), Nissan (147), Isuzu (147), Mercedes-Benz (131), Volkswagen (91) and LDV (64).
The Ford Ranger continued its market leadership in September 2024 with 928 registrations. It was followed by the Toyota Hilux (624), Mitsubishi Triton (270), Nissan Navara (147), Ford Transit (133), Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (122), Toyota Hiace (115), Isuzu D-Max (74), Volkswagen Amarok (64) and the Iveco Daily (34).
