The latest seventh-generation Mercedes E-Class has arrived, initially as an E 300 selling for $134,100. E-Class is the most popular Mercedes line historically, with over 16 million produced in its almost 80-year lifespan.
The latest example rides on a platform stretched by 20mm and features a long bonnet, short front overhang, fresh front grille (with optional illumination) and star-motif rear lights. Other items include adaptive LED headlamps, a pair of lateral character lines, and nine available colours, six being metallic finishes. The Cd figure is a claimed 0.23, thanks to a flat underbody, air deflectors for the wheels and front section sealing.
Mild hybrid power for E 300
Powering the mild hybrid E 300 is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, and a 17kW/205Nm integrated starter-generator (ISG). Total system power is 190kW and 400Nm. The ISG utilizes a 48-volt on-board electrical system that permits gliding, boosting, and energy recovery. An updated nine-speed automatic transmission adds smoothness.
Steel spring suspension with passive selective damping is fitted as standard equipment. Airmatic air suspension with adaptive damping is an option, and so too rear-axle steering.
The new E 300 rides on 20-inch AMG multispoke alloy wheels in black with a high-sheen finish.
Bigger and smarter cabin
The cabin of the new E-Class is now more spacious. Drivers have 5mm of extra headroom while rear-seat passengers gain 10mm of added kneeroom and 17mm more legroom. Rear-seat elbow width improves by 25mm while luggage capacity is 540 litres.
Helping the driver is the third-generation MBUX multimedia infotainment system. A standard-fit Superscreen (14.4-inch display, 12.3-inch front passenger screen and driver digital instruments) spans the entire dashboard. It features individualised graphics, smartphone-like functionality and a 5G communication module. MBUX uses a single-layer design so scrolling through submenus is a thing of the past.
Those inhabiting the Apple universe can use their phone or watch to lock and start the car. Wireless smartphone integration is standard. A selfie camera is available overseas and is due here at some point.
The Hey Mercedes voice assistant now has AI help and can multitask. Entertainment is provided by a Burmester 4D surround sound system. It has 17 speakers, a 730wpc amplifier and two tactile transducers (shakers) integrated into each backrest.
Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos enhances the surround sound experience.
Safety first with 11 airbags
Up front are powered sports seats with leather upholstery and memory positions. Three interior upholstery colours are available. Heated multi-contour front seats with rear-seat heating can be had as an option. The latest energizing comfort systems include an anti-travel sickness programme.
Driving assistance systems include active lane-keeping, adaptive cruise control, active lane change assist, automatic emergency braking, active blind spot assist, and Presafe collision systems. Traffic sign recognition, 11 airbags and self parking are also standard fit.
The latest Mercedes-Benz E 300 sedan is now available to order, with deliveries beginning this week. AMG variants are coming and a fully electric E-Class is likely at some point.
