Omoda New Zealand lifted the lid on pricing for its striking C5 and E5 hybrid and electric compact crossovers last night. At a glitzy Viaduct Event Centre function for the media and dealers, Sheldon Humphries outlined key data for the six-model line-up. Mr Humphries is the Country Manager for Omoda and Jaecoo New Zealand.
He revealed that the pure electric E5 BX variant will carry a starting price of $47,990, undercutting BYD Atto 3 and MG ZS EV rivals. The better-specified E5 EX costs $54,990.
The latter adds items like powered, heated and ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. It also comes with 64-colour ambient lighting, a powered tailgate and sunroof, rear privacy glass and a 360-degree surround monitor.
The E5 is a modern compact crossover measuring 4424mm in length. Its 150kW/340Nm motor that drives the front wheels is powered by a 61kWh LFP battery pack. Claimed WLTP range is 430km. On an 80kW DC fast charger a 10-80 per cent rezip evidently takes 28min.
The E5 accelerates to open road speeds in a stated 7.6sec. With 17 ADAS functions, the Omoda E5 should warrant a five-star ANCAP safety rating. Its C5 sib achieved that in 2022.
Inside, the E5 dash design is typically electric minimalist. Most functions are relegated to the dual 24.6-inch digital screens, both under one glass panel.
Pick the E5 from its ICE-powered C5 sib by the lack of a grille up front; C5 has a prominent spider-web style grille.
And on the C5, Mr Humphries also outlined pricing for the quartet of petrol-powered models. The base 1.5T BX kicks things off at just under $30k ($29,990) while a better-specified EX sells for $34,990. The C5 1.6 GT has a sticker price of $37,990 and all three of these are front-wheel drive. Only the $39,990 C5 1.6 GT AWD gains a rear prop shaft.
The 1.5T engine produces 108kW of power and 210Nm of torque, the output reaching the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission. A zero to 100 time of 9.9sec is claimed but that’s pessimistic. We found 9.1sec closer to the mark. Mean fuel use is a claimed 6.9L/100km.
The 1.6 GT variants uses a slightly bigger engine that outputs 147kW and 290Nm, enough to shave two seconds off the 0-100 time. It runs a seven-speed twin-clutch transmission.
Features common to the range include Qi phone charging, smart voice interaction, and wireless smartphone connectivity, while safety features are similar to those in the E5.
All Omoda vehicles have a seven-year/unlimited km warranty. There are currently 13 dealers nationwide.
