The next Peugeot 208 is due in 2026 and offers a radical look inside and out, as it moves to the new Stellantis STLA Small platform.
Its premium underpinnings distinguish it from the new C3 and upcoming Grande Panda, both of which use Smart Car architecture. It will initially launch as an electric car, with the possibility of petrol and hybrid powertrains later, depending on demand.
The 208 will gain slim headlights and distinctive three-claw DRLs, plus a patterned nose with body-coloured elements for premium positioning.
At the rear, a dark strip of plastic joins another set of three-claw light clusters. Peugeot lettering will be accompanied by 208 badges beneath.
The big news is that the car’s interior will mimic that of the Peugeot Inception concept. Peugeot design director Matthias Hossann told AutoExpress that the Hypersquare steering wheel will feature. So will the next generation of the i-Cockpit instrument cluster. By wire technology allows a “super agile and super efficient” wheel shape, he said. Using a smaller wheel that sits lower imparts a small-car feel, instilling it with a darty, fun persona.
We are testing it now and expect it in 2026, he added. Evidently, “it will change everything.”
The squared-off wheel will likely feature touchpads to control key functions. Peugeot believes the Hypersquare design offers an “entirely natural and universal grip of the steering control”.
The designers and engineers want all control at the driver’s fingertips. And drivers quickly adapt apparently. Unlike Tesla, the indicator wand remains.
There’s a new take on the i-Cockpit. Aspects like battery status can be seen as the driver approaches the car.
The new 208’s positioning as a more premium model should see the car receive plusher materials and have tighter tolerances. Expect sustainable leather alternatives, brushed metals and textiles for the doors and dash.
It’s likely 208 will offer electric and hybrid powertrains. A PHEV is unlikely, given the car’s size.
With the electric version improved efficiency (over 400km of range) and faster charging (at least 100kW) are expected, without an increase in battery size.
This newcomer probably won’t debut until late 2026. A new 2008 crossover will follow.
