Polestar 4 is the latest offering from the Sino-Swedish firm, an electric performance SUV coupé and the second SUV in the brand’s line-up. It will slot in between Polestar 2 and Polestar 3 on both size and price.
Polestar’s CEO, Thomas Ingenlath, commented that with this vehicle Polestar has taken a fundamental new approach to SUV coupé design, configuring it to enhance the experience and comfort of the rear occupants. Included are reclining seats and a full length glass roof with optional electrochromatic functionality (transparent or opaque).
Taking key elements from the Polestar Precept concept car, the rear window is removed which facilitates an “immersive rear occupant experience”.
Polestar 4 utilises the Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) developed by Geely Holding. It features a 2999mm wheelbase and the SUV coupe is 4839mm long, 2139mm wide and 1544mm tall. Its glass roof stretches beyond the heads of rear seat occupants, for a unique interior ambience. A media and climate control screen allows those in the back to control their environment.
There is no rear view mirror and instead a high definition screen that shows what’s behind using a roof-mounted camera. The driver gets a wider field of view than normal or can instead view the rear seat occupants, if need be.
The interior ‘soft tech’ materials draw inspiration from the fashion and sportswear industries, and are designed for enhanced recyclability. A new tailored knit textile and inlay carpets consist entirely of recycled polyester that is made to fit, producing no offcuts or waste.
The Polestar 4 promises to be the quickest model yet from the firm. The dual-motor variant has a combined output of 400kW, giving it a sprint time of 3.8sec to 100km/h. Adaptive damping is standard, and sharp steering combine for agile handling.
Single-motor versions will also be available, featuring rear-wheel drive. Wheels range from 20 to 22 inches in size, while tyres are supplied by Pirelli and Michelin.
There are two long range versions, both with a 102kWh battery pack. One is the 400kW/686Nm dual-motor variant with a range target of up to 560 km WLTP. A disconnect clutch allows the front motor to disengage when not needed, maximising range and efficiency.
Up to 200kW DC and 22kW AC charging is standard. Bidirectional charging is included, and a heat pump is standard fit. Drive modes include Range and Performance in the long-range dual-motor variant.
The Long-Range Single-Motor version has a 200kW/343Nm propulsion unit at the rear with a range target of up to 600km WLTP.
In Polestar 4, the infotainment system is powered by Android Automotive OS and now utilises a 15.4-inch landscape-oriented screen with Google inbuilt. Apple CarPlay is also included. A premium Harman Kardon audio system is available with 12 speakers and 1400W multichannel amplifier. Over-the-air updates are possible for the latest software.
Safety features include the SuperVision Advanced Driver Assistance System from Mobileye. It uses 12 cameras, one radar and twelve ultrasonic sensors, along with a driver monitoring camera. Up to nine airbags are standard, as is a head-up display with 14.7-inch projection area in front of the driver relaying key data.
Several optional equipment packs are available. A Plus Pack upgrades comfort and technology while Plus Pro Pack adds a the electrochromic glass roof and additional interior illumination. The Nappa Pack includes animal welfare secured Nappa leather upholstery with ventilation, massage and additional headrest speakers for the front seats.
The Performance Pack enhances the performance and driving experience of the Long-Range Dual-Motor version, with 22-inch wheels, four-piston Brembo brakes, Polestar chassis tuning and Swedish gold details for the brakes, seat belts and valve caps.
Production begins at the end of this year, with launches in major markets in 2024.
Indicative pricing kicks off at 60,000 Euros.
